2/28/2011 Letter from Elder Joshua Shelhamer

This week, here on the island of Sal, I had the blessing of witnessing two people choose to follow Jesus Christ and be baptized by those holding His authority. The following day in church, I had the privilege of confirming one of them as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
As the "Guide to the scriptures" states, "Confirmation is the right of every worthy baptized member of the Church to have the constant influence of the Holy Ghost. Following a person’s baptism into the true Church of Jesus Christ, he receives the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands from one who has the proper authority ( Acts 8:12–25;). Receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost is often spoken of as a baptism by fire ( Matt. 3:11;)."
As I placed my hands on the head of the person being confirmed, the influence of the Holy Spirit filled me as I confirmed the member and bestowed upon them the Holy Ghost. The blessing that followed was inspired from heaven.

As LDS.org states, "The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead. He is a personage of spirit, without a body of flesh and bones. He is often referred to as the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, or the Comforter."
I testify that the Holy Ghost is the spirit of God that comforts and guides us in our lives. As a missionary I enjoy the gifts of the spirit that I am provided with to preach the gospel and help others come unto Christ.

I thank everyone for their support as I continue to serve the Lord and the people of Cape Verde. The Lord is continuing to bless the people of this nation.

1/31/2011 Letter from Elder Joshua Shelhamer

This week I was given the opportunity to speak in church about trials and how we are refined through our trials. My message was based on the message from the First Presidency of the Church in February 2006.

All of us pass through trials in our lifes; loved ones pass on, sickness comes, and we experience difficult challenges in our lives. Sometimes we just ask our God; why me? The gospel of Jesus Christ, the teachings of the Savior, is a message of sure hope, peace, and comfort in our lives.

Last night I visited a friend that is learning more about Jesus Christ and His teachings, and to our surprise we found that she is passing through a very rough time in her life. Family problems, financial problems, and emotional problems just to name a few. As we testified of the Savior´s love and prayed together, the spirit of the Lord filled the room, and tears came to all.

I testify of the healing power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and His great message of love for all. I leave you my testimony of these things, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
